EDA tools

EDA is a Synopsys-Cadence duopoly whose moat is tool integration and foundry-validated data, not the AI model — so agentic EDA entrenches the incumbents rather than inviting a third entrant by 2028.

The thesis

Core thesis

Synopsys (~$90B) and Cadence (~$100B) form a duopoly in chip design software as entrenched as ASML in lithography. Every advanced chip — from NVIDIA GPUs to Apple M-series to Qualcomm Snapdragon — is designed using their tools. AI integration (Synopsys.ai, Cadence Cerebrus, Google AlphaChip) is automating chip layout, compressing design cycles; the contest has since moved on to agentic design. Siemens EDA (Mentor) is the distant third, holding Calibre sign-off.

State of the art (2026)

By mid-2026 the EDA contest has moved from AI-assisted optimisation to agentic design. At CadenceLIVE 2026 Cadence pushed its ChipStack AI agent toward higher autonomy on NVIDIA Nemotron models, while at Computex 2026 Synopsys demonstrated an autonomous engineer using the newly integrated Ansys IcePak for thermal and physical closure — the Ansys deal having closed in July 2025. Both converge on the same read: the moat is tight tool integration and token-efficient structured design data, not the frontier model, which favours the incumbents over the AI labs. Siemens EDA holds Calibre sign-off; Empyrean and Primarius remain export-control-blocked at advanced nodes.
