SpaceX Falcon 9 has landed 300+ boosters. Starship (super-heavy) targets $10/kg to orbit. Peter Beck (Rocket Lab) built the second most successful launch company. ULA Vulcan, Ariane 6, and Blue Origin New Glenn compete for government and commercial launches. The economics are transformative: $2,700/kg on Falcon 9 vs $54,000/kg on Space Shuttle.
State of the art (2026)
Reuse is now the default, not the differentiator. SpaceX flew 165 Falcon 9 missions in 2025 with fleet-leader booster B1067 reaching a 35th flight, and refurbishment runs roughly $300k against $30M for a new stage. The frontier has moved to full reusability: Starship V3 flew its first flight (Flight 12) in May 2026, deploying Starlink V3 satellites before the booster broke up, triggering an FAA mishap review. The second-mover field is real but bruised - Blue Origin landed a New Glenn booster in late 2025, then lost a vehicle and damaged its only pad in a May 2026 static-fire explosion, while Rocket Lab Neutron has slipped to no earlier than Q4 2026. The contest now is operational cadence and second-stage reuse, not whether reuse works.
