low conviction conceptAutonomous laboratories
Autonomous labs are real but narrow - proven in chemistry/materials demos, but closed-loop, human-out-of-the-loop discovery has not shipped. AI-discovered drugs are in mid-stage trials, unapproved.

The thesis
State of the art (2026)
Autonomous labs remain real but narrow. Carnegie Mellon opened the first university cloud lab with Emerald Cloud Lab in 2024, and CMU Coscientist (Nature, Dec 2023) showed LLMs planning and running cross-coupling chemistry unsupervised. Yet the flagship materials result – Berkeley A-Lab synthesising 43 new compounds (Nature, Nov 2023) – drew sustained challenge from Palgrave and colleagues over genuine novelty, and the paper was corrected in January 2026. Drug discovery is still pre-clinic: Isomorphic Labs raised 600m dollars in March 2025 but expects first-in-human trials only by end-2026. Gerbrand Ceders Radical AI (55m-dollar seed, July 2025) typifies the shift from academic demos to funded platforms. The closed-loop, human-out-of-the-design-loop discovery promised by the thesis has not yet shipped.
